2014 Event Reports

Champions of Champions and Dee Mile

The 'Longest Day' week-end was certainly a memorable one !
Tom Roberts was pushed all the way through the 9 miles Champion of Champions swim by James Leith from Scotland. Kicking strongly throughout, Tom's speed in the final straight was too much for his rival, as he won the Championship in an excellent time of 3 hours 25 minutes !
Meanwhile, up in Chester, Richard Taylor was the All-comers Champion of the River Dee with a fine swim. See the report from Kevin Saunders below.

Excellent Swimming at Ullswater Event !

Five Dolphins swimmers attended the highly-competitive (wetsuit compulsory) Ullswater event on 13th July.
A massive total of 679 swimmers turned out for the event – 5 from Dolphins and several others from Barrow and Howe Bridge LDSCs
The event had a ‘celebration of Britishness’ theme, hence a rendition of ‘God Save the Queen’ before every race, which undoubtedly could be heard at the other end of this huge lake !

Chris Rix and Robert Saile both represented the club in the mile event. Chris had unfortunately been put in a slow wave, and hence spent most of the race swimming round people from the wave before him and also the wave before that ! Despite this, he finished in an excellent 3rd place in 20:43 – a very impressive time for an open water mile. Robert Saile continued to demonstrate his improvement for this year, with a time of 34:38 – 6 seconds faster than his indoor 1500m time in February !

The 3.8km saw 3 of our swimmers – Richard Taylor, Steve Elliot and Judy Brown, participating. The race to the first buoy didn’t so much feel like man against the elements as man against the elements and a few thousand others ! – 229 to be precise ! But of course the trick is to learn to deal with it all, fight for every square inch of water you can get and hope that you don’t get knocked out and that the hat and goggles stay in tact !
Thankfully, having survived the first half lap, the remaining 2 and a half were far more enjoyable, as the field spread out and yet there were several people to choose to swim along with, ensuring that you had company and didn’t get lost !
In the end, our 3 swimmers completed the race in excellent times, with Judy finishing an overall 3rd (1st in category.)

With numbers so high, this fairly cheap and very cheerful event had a really enjoyable atmosphere with lots of smiling faces !
